The Chopping Block Salon’s purpose is to provide a workspace for salon professionals where their wellbeing is valued. We encourage self-care and personal development for employees and clients alike.

Currently Open Roles:

Salon Coordinator $16+/hr with $1,600+ in benefits, plus business training and growth opportunities as we grow and expand our business. Our current General Manager started as a salon coordinator and has more than doubled her pay in a few years. We will need more managers in the future, and this is a great place to start on that path.

Stylist: $25 - $70 /hr plus tips with $1,600 - $3,200 in benefits and up to $2,000 in quarterly bonus opportunities.

Benefits: Every employee is a team member, and we are held to the same standards, with the same opportunities for benefits, based on our contribution.

Every team member gets at least these benefits:

Personal Services $800 per year to have the client experience for yourself.

Retirement funding match up to 4% beginning after 90 days with us.

Personal Wellness Fund of $800 to use for a ski pass, yoga classes, doctors appointments, or anything that supports your wellness.

Paid Vacation after one year accrues up to one week, after two years, accrues up to two weeks. Unpaid time off is flexible, with many of us taking 6 weeks vacation/year.

Paid Sick Leave begins to accrue immediately.

Continued Education in the salon, online, and traveling, with on-the-clock lessons and meetings, plus paid-for classes, including Thriving Stylist Method, Wella Color hands-on Training, and personal coaching quarterly with a mentor.

Hours: We are open 7 days per week. Stylist schedules can change seasonally, tailored to their lifestyle and goals.

Current available shifts:

Saturday 10am - 7pm, or 7am - 2pm, or 3pm - 9pm

Sunday 10am - 7pm, or 7am - 2pm, or 3pm - 9pm

Monday 10am - 7pm, or 7am - 2pm, or 3pm - 9pm

Tuesday 5:30pm - 9pm

Wednesday 7am - 9:30am, or 3:15pm - 9pm

Thursday 5:30pm - 9pm

Friday 7am - 9:30am

Know Your Rights:

Starting January 1, 2022, all Colorado employers are required to provide paid sick leave to their employees, accrued at one hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked, up to a maximum of 48 hours per year. <source link>

Since 2019, Colorado requires all employers in business for two or more years with five or more employees, to offer a qualified retirement plan. This could be a 401(k) from a private provider or they may choose to opt into their state’s sponsored plan. We go above and beyond this requirement, but if your Colorado job does not provide any qualified retirement plan, they might be out of compliance. <source link>

At Chopping Block, we pay hourly instead of commission, for better transparency and compliance. We like to say “it’s like a real job.” Commission stylists in the United States are often taken advantage of when…

1. Their hours worked are not tracked and compared to daily commission: ”Pay can be any agreed rate, as long as minimum wage or more is paid “for all hours worked,” not just on average over a week or pay period.” <source link>

2. They are required to attend meetings or trainings unpaid. ”Required presence at any location is time worked, even if no productive work is done.” <source link>

3. They are not paid for overtime beyond 40 hours per week or 12 hours per day. “extra pay for all overtime hours (in addition to the salary [or commission] that covers the regular rate) of an extra ½ of the regular rate. See: Colorado Overtime Minimum Pay Standards (COMPS Order) #40 (7 CCR 1103-1) section 1.8.2 <source link>

Many small business owners feel too busy to research employment law every year to make sure employees are paid correctly. Policies and procedures often stay the same until employees speak up. There is a courteous way to ask your employer about these updates.

As an example, here is my understanding of legal pay. I am a small business owner, not a lawyer, so I share this made up example in hopes that you will do your own research:

With Colorado minimum wage at $15.16 in 2026, if you work 10 hours on Tuesday and made $60 commission, you should be paid $151.60 for that day, even if you made higher commissions every other day that week. Also, if you worked 60 hours this week, then the last 20 hours worked should be paid at least $22.74 per hour, (minimum wage X 1.5). All of this is in addition to tips, which are not calculated toward minimum wage or overtime.

Tuesday 10 hours, $60 commission, $151.60 total wages owed

Wednesday 13 hours, $200 commission, $204.66 wages owed ($181.92 minimum wage 12 hrs + $22.74 1 hr past 12/day)

Thursday 12 hours, $200 commission, $200 wages owed (meets required $181.92 minimum wage)

Friday 13 hours, $220 commission, $257.72 wages owed (The commission would cover minimum wage if there were no overtime hours. 5 minimum wage hours: $75.80 + overtime hours 8 past 40/week: $181.92 = $257.72)

Saturday 12 hours, $200 commission, $272.88 wages owed (12 overtime hours past 40)

Commission only wages:$880 Lawful minimum wage and overtime wages: $1,086.86

That’s $206.86 in one week, or $10,756 in a year underpaid in this hypothetical. Do you understand how your pay is calculated? It’s not the Middle Ages. You deserve to know.
